History

In 1963 Jean Mill (American) crossed an Asian Leopard Cat (Felis Bengalensis) with a black domestic cat. Her idea: to breed a wild looking cat with a loving temperament.

From this pairing she kept one queen. Unfortunately, for personal reasons she had to put an end to her breeding programme.

A few years later, Jean Mill received some female animals from a university in California from another breeding programme, so that she might further develop her idea. Thus a second attempt was started in the 1980s. Success wasn't far behind: in 1986 she publicly presented her cats for the first time.

Much commitment and continuous development led to the unique type we see today - a devoted and loving cat with wild looks.

Temperament

Bengal cats are friendly, curious, intelligent, vocal, highly active and very playful. They love water, and spend much time with their toys, distinguishing themselves from other cats through their distinctive voice.

Their gait is reminiscent of a small leopard, and their ability to jump is astounding. Through their elegance Bengals have a very special vibrancy, making them quite extraordinary cats.

Care

Bengal cats require enough space for running, jumping and generally running riot, as well as scratchposts to climb and stretch their claws on, and a place to relax. If you are generally occupied throughout the day, then don't leave a Bengal alone. They can be full of mischief if left to their own devices for too long! A playmate would be brilliant.

Our Kalindi Bengals have moved in with many domestic cats, including Russian Blues, British Shorthairs, Tonkanese and Sacred Birmans, and get on magnificently with them. You can see related photos in the kitten gallery labelled In a new home.
